Saudi Arabia Methacrylate Corporation (SAMAC) has started commercial production. SAMAC is a joint venture between Mitsubishi Chemical and Sabic, each holding half of its shares.
Mitsubishi Chemical said that the plant has completed the production of methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) performance tests, and began production on April 2.
The facility costs 300 million euros, and its annual production capacity of methyl methacrylate monomer and polymethyl methacrylate is 2.5 million tons/year and 400,000 tons/year, respectively.
Mitsubishi Chemical said that it is expected that the demand for methyl methacrylate monomer will increase steadily with the growth of the world economy.
Mitsubishi Chemical will provide services to Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa through SAMAC.
MMA monomers are used on a large scale to produce organic glass (PPMA).
